Overview

The commission covered Mechanical & Electrical surveys across approximately 10–12 properties within the Metropolitan Police estate across London. Sites ranged from active police stations to call centres and other specialist facilities, each with different operational requirements and M&E systems.

Delivery was through Sodexo as the Facilities Management provider. Surveys were carried out independently across the estate, with full ownership of the survey process and electronic data capture over approximately 3–4 months alongside other project commitments.

Personal role

Sole surveyor responsible for planning site visits, carrying out M&E surveys across the estate, capturing asset information electronically, and managing programme progress while balancing other professional commitments.

Scope of work
  • Carry out M&E surveys across approximately 10–12 sites
  • Inspect and record M&E assets and systems
  • Capture asset information electronically and consistently across building types
  • Work independently and manage the survey programme
  • Adapt the survey approach to each operational environment
  • Provide collected survey information for use by the FM team
Challenges
  • Building types and operational environments varied widely, requiring an adaptable but consistent capture approach.
  • Active police facilities demanded a professional, considerate working method that avoided unnecessary disruption.
  • As sole surveyor, workload, travel and site prioritisation had to be managed across London while other commitments continued.
  • Geographic spread across the estate required efficient planning of travel and visit sequencing.
Outcome
  • M&E surveys were completed across approximately 10–12 properties over a three-to-four-month period.
  • An electronic record of surveyed M&E assets was produced across a diverse range of operational buildings, supporting the FM provider.
  • The commission demonstrated independent multi-site programme delivery within security-sensitive, operational environments — including police stations, call centres and specialist facilities.
